The Bristol Bay Area Health  Corporation (BBAHC) provides health care for the Bristol Bay Region. Its  Community Health Aides provide continuing primary health care and emergency  medical services in the villages. Health Aides provide preventive and health  surveillance services to include prenatal care, well child exams, and school age  fluoride treatments. Patients who require further treatment are referred to the  health corporation’s Kanakanak Hospital. Kanakanak Hospital is a 16 bed facility  that serves patients of all ages in the
area of medical care, pediatrics,  obstetrics, well baby, out-patients, skilled and observational beds, swing beds,  home health, community health, infant learning, maternal-child health, emergency  room, WIC, mental health, and drug and alcohol services. Ancillary support  services include: audiology, dental, diabetes, laboratory, medevac, optometry,  radiology, social services, and specialty clinics. Patients requiring care not  provided at Kanakanak are referred to other regional medical facilities  including Alaska Native Medical
Center for those that are of Native descent.  BBAHC offers complete medical services including inpatient and outpatient care,  24 hour Emergency Room and Medivac, Optometry, Dental, Prenatal care,  Prescriptions and Laboratory  services.

Emergency services/crisis intervention is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.  After hours calls are dispatched to Counselors through the Dillingham Police Department or Counselors can be reached through Kanakanak Hospital.

The BBAHC Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Program offers a wide variety of services. Provides community education upon request, including the B.A.B.E.S. Program for children.  Also provides resource materials, including video/audio tapes. Services are also  provided at Jake’s Place, a 12-bed residential facility available for those  clients who are assessed as needing more structured, intensive treatment.  Located next to Kanakanak Hospital. Walk-ins are welcome. 
 
Program services include:
 Assessment and  Evaluation: Assessments and Evaluations are done at the request of the client or  a referring agency.
 Intensive  Outpatient Counseling: This is a group counseling service, 3 hours long, 5 nights per week, for five weeks.
 
Outpatient Counseling: One on one counseling sessions, usually one hour long for 8-12  weeks, followed by 3-6 months of Aftercare. Total program requires about one year.


Aftercare Program:  Aftercare is a group meeting. Sessions are 2 hours long, once a week.

Transitional Care:  For people on their way to treatment, returning from treatment, or village  residents enrolled in the Intensive Outpatient Program.

Residential Care:  This new program provides supervised living for clients waiting to go to and returning from inpatient treatment outside the region.

Follow-up: Contacts  are designed to assist clients with ongoing sobriety issues.

Freddy’s Social Detox: 5-bed unit attached to Jake’s providing early intervention and structured  support following treatment. Provides intensive services for chronic alcoholics  early in their recovery.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a  self-help/support group, meeting at the Alano Club. Doors open every night at  7:30 p.m. Meetings run from 8:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Bristol Bay 
Counseling Center staff brings a variety of skills, education and techniques to the center and offer psychotherapy, counseling, case    management and life skills  training. Village based workers provide on-site services  with support from office staff.

 The Bristol Bay 
Counseling Center offers a variety of services to all villages in the Bristol Bay area, including:

Emergency Services – Outreach, crisis intervention,  and referrals are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to all of the Bristol
  Bay area. After-hours and weekend emergency calls are dispatched to counselors by Dillingham Police at (907) 842-5354.

Outpatient Services – Individual, couple, family, group counseling and psychotherapy is available  for adults, children and adolescents throughout Bristol Bay. Consultation and  evaluation services are available to schools, hospitals, court systems, and  social service agencies.

Psychiatric Services – Psychiatric assessments and evaluations are available by appointment only. Call the Counseling Center office for scheduling of intake and  appointments.
 
Child and Adolescent Services – Offers crisis intervention, individual, family and group therapy to children and adolescents with various emotional and behavioral  difficulties. Consultation services and presentations on specific mental health services to children and adolescents are also available. 

Prevention and  Education – The Counseling Center offers various prevention and education  programs to all villages of the Bristol Bay region, by request. For information and scheduling call the office.

 Community Support Services – Specialized outpatient and residential services provided to adults with chronic mental illness. 

Village Outreach & Counseling Services - Outreach counseling, referral and case management services are available in the village through Family Service Workers and during itinerant village travel by clinical staff in the regional office. Call for current travel schedules.

Male Awareness Program – This is a 24-session anger control program aimed at preventing men’s violence towards women.

 Natural Helper Program – A peer helper program for high and middle school students available to  communities by request. Funding limits may apply.

Community Development – Services are available to all communities in Bristol Bay by request.

Suicide Prevention/Education – Available throughout Bristol Bay to communities, schools,  or groups by request. 

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing – Debriefing services for first responders to a traumatic incident. 

“Our House” – A  short-term crisis/respite center for individuals suffering with chronic or  persistent mental illness. Clients receive comprehensive assistance.  

Fees: On a sliding  scale based on income, no person will be denied services due to lack of funds.

Works with individuals and agencies to promote healthy lifestyles especially targeting  youth, promoting traditional cultural activities and including elders in Dillingham services.

Prevention activities include: alternative healthy activities for youth, alcohol/drug free dances, family movie nights, and supplying helmets to the community at cost. Cultural activities include: preservation of native dance, traditional arts and crafts, and subsistence and traditional foods. 

Helps coordinate services with other programs, such as: Healthy Hearts program, youth access to tobacco prevention and cessation, Search and Rescue and Dillingham Snowmobile Association.

The BBAHC Diabetes  Prevention / Lifestyle Change program is recognized by the American Diabetes  Association. The program provides diabetes self-management education and  follow-up care. A full-time dietitian and certified diabetes educator are on  staff. The ANMC Diabetes program visits annually. Program services include: Free  blood sugar testing, Nutrition counseling for all ages with or without
diabetes,  high blood pressure, overweight, or heart disease, "Walk to be fit" walking  program, the "Jump for health" jump rope activity program for kids, community  visits to schools and adult classes on diabetes and nutrition, Youth Sports  funding program-funding youth sports equipment, Aerobics program and aerobics  instructor training, and RPM (Rural People In Motion) walking/running
club and  so much more.

Addresses a wide range of nutrition issues. Conducts nutrition training for health care providers  and individuals on: weight control, feeding, food preparation, diabetes,  nutrition and special diets. The Dietary Program is a WIC vendor for specialty  formulas.

The Health Education Program consists of three components: 1. The WIC program provides foods and nutrition education to children under 5 as well as pregnant, breastfeeding, and post-partum women. Additionally, the WIC program supports breastfeeding by a pump loan program. 2. The Community Health Representative program has eight staff in various villages who educate the community on a
  variety of health education topics. 3. The currently developing Comprehensive Nicotine Dependence Treatment program. A Resource Library is also available with  a variety of videos, posters, pamphlets and books. In addition, a blender, skillets, and a number of bread machines are available to schools and childcare programs to be loaned for nutrition education purposes.

The focus of ILP is on children, birth to 3 years old, who may experience a developmental delay.  A delay in growth may occur in areas like: rolling over, sitting up, reaching for toys, holding toys, crawling, walking, making sounds and talking. The WIC supplement  food program provides nutritious foods and nutrition education to pregnant and  breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age five who meet income and  nutritional needs eligibility requirements.
